It is the largest aquarium in Europe: an exciting journey through the world’s marine habitats with 70 tanks housing 15,000 creatures of more than 400 species.
Built around the year 1098 on top of an earlier basilica from the 5th-6th century and later enlarged in formal and fine style, the cathedral dedicated to Saint Lawrence houses the ashes of the city’s patron saint, St John the Baptist, which arrived in Genoa at the end of the First Crusade. Also here, in the city’s historic centre, stands the childhood home of Christopher Columbus, a memorial dedicated to history’s most famous explorer.
One of Genoa’s most symbolic historical sites, residence of the Doge since 1339, it is now the city’s main centre of cultural production. Art exhibitions, conferences, festivals and educational activities are held in the Doge’s Palace throughout the year. Nearby is Via Garibaldi, one of the main streets of the historical centre, famous for the rich architecture of the residential buildings, the concentration of artistic works and the elegant gardens, as well as being home to the Strada Nuova Museums. A highly popular tourist destination.
Genoa’s main square, a meeting place for important city events, is dedicated to Raffaele De Ferrari, Duke of Galliera, a generous benefactor who donated a large sum of money for the expansion of the port in 1875.
